CB radios have been in use for off-road and on-road communication for a very long time. But the main issue lies in the method you choose for installing the CB equipment in your vehicle. It is recommended that you go for the simplest and the cheapest way to install everything so that you can save your time and money. As a general guideline, you can follow the following process to make the most effective CB radio installation successful.
1. Buy the BEST CB radio
For installing CB Radio in Jeep we will use SR-497 HPC as reference device. You can buy it online or can easily grab one from the Stryker outlet nearby. You can consider other brands(Magnum, Galaxy) too as per your budget and functional requirements.
2. Choose the mount location carefully
When you decide for the mount location, give priority to the point under the AC controls that are present near the cigarette lighter. Make sure the point you select for mounting your CB radio installation is easy for you to access the controls while driving without any hindrance. There are many online tutorials that will give you good ideas about how to select the most effective mount location for your equipment in your jeep. One good idea is to place the equipment beside the driver’s seat but here you can only install the CB radio that is small in size.
3. Put the mount in place for CB Radio Installation
You will find a stock hole in the frame present below the driver’s seat. This is where you can place your mount but it will serve the purpose more effectively in case of power seats.
4. Adjust the hole according to your requirement and put CB radio mount
Bring the mount in vertical position and fix it in the frame by drilling a hole into it and fixing the nut and bolt in place. Once the mount has been installed, you can install the CB radio on it from the top. The frame and the two bolts provide strong support to the equipment. Do this in a way that allows easy wiring later on.
5. Do the wiring
For Best CB Radio Installation wiring should be done up to the mark The carpet under the front driver’s side seat has a hole that serves as a convenient point for routing your wires. Route the wires below the carpet and move them to the hood release. Take away the plastic trim and bring the wires out from this hole.
6. Route the power wires
You can also consider using a power wire. This wire actually has a mini fuse adapter connected to it that heads into the main fuse box slot and accepts a 10 amp fuse box from the upper side. There are few slots provided in the inside fuse box that is present on the dashboard’s portion in front of the driver’s seat but they all are un-wired from the fuse box. Generally the Manual says that the rear 12v outlet was not present but still it works well simply by plugging it into the fuse box that is further plugged into the power cable. For ideal CB Radio installation you set the ground wire, fix the ground wires with 2 bolts. It is possible that you hear some static from the fuse box and the ground when the installation has not been done properly but in case a strong signal is there, the CB radio will sound clear.
7. Fix the mike mount
Now it’s time for the mike to be placed. Consider the left side of the steering wheel for this purpose. Although this place is very difficult to mount the mike but it is worth considering in terms of accessibility. It brings the mike and the CB on the same side. You need drilling some holes for this but before doing that, ensure that your car’s door is not blocked.
Another issue with this spot is that it makes the wiring visible and turns it into a hindrance when getting on or off the jeep. For overcoming this issue, route the wire from below the plastic trim that is above the hood release, move it from below the plastic at your car’s door and bring it out from the CB radio’s side. This arrangement will keep the setup organized and wiring out of sight and there will be much length of wire available to comfortably access the mike even when stretched.
8. Move towards Antenna Cable Installation
Once the installed CB radio in Jeep successfully, you need to work with the antenna cable. Make a hole in the lower side of the plastic trim as an exit point for the cable. This is important for avoiding pinching of the cable at any point because of the plastic trim. By making the cable exit from this hole, bring it to the rear seat belt bolts. Then move it below the carpet along all the other wires placed before. When it reaches there, take off the plastic trim and bring it up to the driver’s side rear corner plastic to the level that it approaches the rear glass. Make it exit the plastic.
9. Put Antenna mount in place
This is the final yet the most important part of the entire process of Installing CB Radio in Jeep. The CB antenna installation needs more attention for adding efficiency to the CB system. There are many ways to mount the antenna optimally but below is a DIY solution to the problem:
- Purchase a trailer hitch wiring kit that includes a mounting bracket as well. It will cost you USD$10 to get it online. The mounting bracket is supposed to be an “L” shape part that supports the entire antenna mount. It should have at least 1/8” metal and needs to be strong enough without any defect.
- Mounting bracket has 4 mounting holes on the corners with a big one in the center. For mounting on the rear tire, two opposite holes (top left and bottom right) should be drilled with a wide space in between so that they can support the antenna mount well. If you place an antenna spring in between the antenna, it makes the antenna strong and flexible.
